Small power plants
Small power plants have become big business in Norway after the prime minister declared that the era of large scale hydro-electric development is over. Small power plants are defined as power plants generating an output that will service around 2,500 households.
While the larger hydro-electric plants are generally publicly owned, many small power plants are owned by local landowners and farmers. On a global basis, small power plants could be deployed both in developing countries and in areas where large scale hydro-electric potential has already been developed. Smaller hydro-electric developments require less investment and project development is simpler. Small hydro-electric plants have the potential to create income and provide renewable energy in some of the world’s poorest and most inaccessible areas.
